Democratic innovation and experimentation

Avatar: Erdem Ovacik Erdem Ovacik

We need to recognise public trust in democratic institutions is in decline over the last 20 years. Our institutions are no longer fit to deal with the sophistication of the world, unable to regulate them effectively, and also not transparent enough, and finally, any public decision-making process places too many layers between citizens and decisions. The inability of democracy to deal with public goods is the main reason behind us falling behind with major issues, also here at home: from excessive inequality, affordable housing, to air quality and biodiversity. This is the METACRISIS.

Thus, we need a serious investment into innovating democracy itself. I suggest a minimum of 1% of GDP invested into undertaking vastly different processes as experiments, studying their efficacy and reforming institutions. As a resource, I recommend the book, "The Next Democracy".
