A new European budget fit for our ambitions
A driving force behind European action
Education with awareness: a key investment for the future of Europe
Education faces serious problems, such as falling academic standards, increased anxiety and emotional mismanagement, as well as dropping out of school and cyberbullying. These phenomena are related to the excessive use of social networks, which affects the attention and well-being of young people. The EU must protect the new generations, as they are key to a better future. According to Articles 6 and 165 TFEU, the EU cannot legislate directly on education, but it can promote support and coordination measures, as demonstrated by the Erasmus+ programme. Along these lines, the Wellbeing and Mental Health at School for Policymakers project already offers recommendations on mental health. Therefore, it is proposed to create an economic fund in the budget 2028-2034 to finance programs of mindfulness and emotional management in schools. This initiative would include the development of pedagogical materials, teacher training, regular sessions in schools and evaluation of results. Previous experiences in the U.S. have shown that these programs are effective in improving care, reducing stress, and decreasing school dropout. This initiative would reinforce the values of Article 2 TEU and the right to education of Article 14 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights. We urge the EU to include it in the 2028-2034 budget, as investing in the well-being of young people is investing in Europe's future.
