European Disability Forum: An intersectional approach to intergenerational fairness

Avatar: Marine Uldry Marine Uldry

The European Disability Forum (EDF) welcomes the European Commission’s commitment to intergenerational fairness and adoption of a strategy on the topic. Persons with disabilities of all ages are still facing exclusion and discrimination in the EU, with young and older persons with disabilities being confronted to diverse barriers that need targeted actions. To flourish in society, people with disabilities of all ages need to be included in all discussion related to intergenerational fairness.

This is particularly true for older persons with disabilities, who face a variety of issues related to access to healthcare, support for independent living, protection of their legal capacity, and affordable and accessible housing. EDF had been supported the call for a specific action plan on ageism who must include persons with disabilities. The Action Plan should be an integral part of the EU's Strategy on Intergenerational Fairness, based on human rights, intersectionality, equality and solidarity within and between generations. It should ensure coherence between the EU's and member states' commitments to equal rights for all ages.

Additionally, the voice of youth with disabilities is essential to a flourishing society. From access to mainstream education, employment, cultural activities, housing- young persons with disabilities also face their own challenges due to a lack of inclusion and inequality.
