  • +A European Minimum Wage for Young People: Stop the Exploitation of Interns

Tekst główny (English)

  • +The European Union should introduce a minimum wage for internships and training contracts aimed at people under 30.
  • +Across Europe, many internships offer only symbolic compensation, often far below a decent standard. In some cases, internships are used to replace regular jobs, without offering proper rights or real career opportunities.
  • +We suggest setting a minimum pay level of at least 60% of national minimum wage (when applicable), or standard amount at EU level.
  • +To support this, the EU should create a fund to help cover intern wages in small and medium-sized enterprisesdim, non-profits, and public organisations that offer meaningful and ethical internships, especially in sectors like culture, social work, the environment and innovation.
  • +This fund would be especially useful in highly regulated fields like law, where internships in law firms or public institutions often require full-time work but pay very little. This makes it hard for people who can’t afford to work for free to access these opportunities.
  • +Some EU countries already guarantee a minimum wage for internships that go beyond a certain duration.
  • +Guaranteeing fair remuneration for internships is essential to support a smooth transition from education to employment. Internships should offer young people real opportunities to develop skills, gain experience and enter the labour market. Now it’s time for the EU to set common rules.
  • +Europe must end unpaid or underpaid internships that amount to hidden exploitation.
