- +Every five years, the night before we meet in the clearing, I lie awake. Maybe it’s the fire, or the silence. By dawn, I have packed my old stone, the same one I once placed in the circle years ago, when I was invited to carry responsibility. The path to the gathering winds through tall grass and tree roots; Children run ahead of us, barefoot and laughing, past the elders walking slowly. At the centre, in the clearing, ashes cover the coals from the last cycle, held by an old copper bowl. This is an important moment for our society, it’s a collective pause to look back, and to name what must be carried forward. The coals are fed with pine soaked in resin, and the flames catch gradually, slowly coming back alive.

- +Later, we will gather again; as always, in circles. The citizen circles will reflect on what we have seen in the past years, what the soil is telling us, and what needs adapting. The elders – who take decisions for the good of society in normal times – will bring questions to the citizen circles next week, and they will sit among us. When a new cycle starts, new stewards will listen, helping make sense of what is heard. I think they might talk about the climate shifts we need to prepare for, the seeds we will plant next season, or a new agreement on water rights.

- +Some things might change. Some might return. But for now, the fire burns and no one is alone. This is how we begin again.
