  • +Intergenerational Fairness beyond GDP

Tekst (English)

  • +To ensure genuine intergenerational justice, we must move beyond economic models that rely on endless growth. A post-growth approach for Europe recognizes that prosperity cannot be built on the overuse of resources, ecological destruction, deepening inequalities and the undervaluing of unpaid care work all of which undermine the well-being of future generations.
  • +True intergenerational justice means living within planetary boundaries and distributing resources fairly across time. This requires shifting from the primary objective of GDP growth to wellbeing and care as a central policy goal. Public investment must prioritize social and ecological resilience—care work, education, climate adaptation—not growth for its own sake. Governments should monitor and direct private actors and finance, whether via capital controls and public ownership structures, to address wider societal goals beyond profitability incentives. Fiscal frameworks should reflect this shift, with tools like wellbeing and gender budgeting and progressive taxation measures (e.g. wealth tax) ensuring today’s consumption of resources doesn’t come at tomorrow’s expense.
  • +Integrating a feminist post-growth approach into intergenerational justice is essential to ensure that economic systems work for people and the planet—now and in the future. It’s not just about avoiding harm, but about building shared, sustainable prosperity across generations on a finite planet.
