A new European budget fit for our ambitions
A driving force behind European action
Increasing youth literacy and critical thinking in the fight against misinformation
The next EU budget should include investments in programs aimed at supporting literacy and critical thinking among young people. Disinformation and hoaxes threaten democratic values, public health, and social cohesion across Europe. I propose creating a Europe-wide program that would introduce mandatory media education in primary and secondary schools. This program would teach young people to recognize disinformation, verify facts and develop critical thinking skills. It would align with the European Media Literacy Agenda and the Action Plan against Disinformation which the EU has developed to protect citizens from fake information. The program should also include funding for teacher training to effectively develop these skills in students. The EU should support the creation of digital platforms and apps with interactive courses and games that teach young people to identify fake news. The program should support youth projects, campaigns and competitions that raise awareness of media literacy among peers. Special attention must be given to marginalized groups, such as young people from disadvantaged families, minorities and migrants. Investment in media literacy and critical thinking is essential to protect European democracy and support the Digital Education Action Plan and the European Digital Skills Strategy.
