Titel (English)

  • +The European Commission Needs Citizen Centric Policies in the Job Market

Hoofdtekst (English)

  • +The overall trend in western democracies is clear. Shifting to zero hour contracts, or temporary positions, reducing job security, depressing wages, and exempting specific job types from minimum wage guarantees. This happened also in Europe with e.g. Article 3(3) of the Posted Workers Directive (2016/1234/EU), which exempted transport sector workers from minimum wage. At the same time more and more people in the white collar sector are being hired as external consultants with precarious contracts that are incredibly stressful and leave no security.

  • +Why do we do this, why is the only conversation focused on "competitiveness" and efficiency, while we kid ourselves that employement is high, but only because of these terrible working conditions and contracts?
  • +
  • +The EU should invest more resources in supporting policies and recommendations aimed at improving the educational sector, as well as creating better and safer working conditions. But unless the decision-making process is only one sided i.e. from businesses to EU Commission, without including the voices of younger generations and workers, how can this shift even take place?
