Un nouveau budget européen à la hauteur de nos ambitions
Un moteur de l’action européenne
Increasing EU Support for People with Disabilities to Build a Fairer, More Accessible Europe
One quarter of EU citizens report having a disability, that’s over 100 million people. Yet, according to the European Court of Auditors, the EU’s actions in supporting people with disabilities have had only limited impact.
People with disabilities still face multiple forms of discrimination and barriers in everyday life. Many public buildings and transport systems remain inaccessible. In the workplace, they are underrepresented and lack adequate support to remain employed. Children with disabilities struggle to access inclusive education that meets their needs. And they also face major obstacles in accessing healthcare, sports, culture, and political participation. These systemic barriers contribute to a significantly higher risk of social exclusion and poverty.
Of course, Member States play a key role, but the EU must lead the way and push for stronger actions. While the EU Disability Strategy 2021-2030 sets ambitious goals, the current monitoring system does not clearly demonstrate how EU funds are improving the lives of people with disabilities.
To address these gaps, the EU should significantly increase its funding to improve accessibility, invest in inclusive education programs, support professional integration initiatives and launch awareness campaigns to combat stereotypes.
Strengthening these actions is not only a matter of rights, it’s essential to build a fairer Europe, where everyone can live with dignity and independence, regardless of ability.
