Tackling Hatred in Society

Have your say and have an impact on policy

Hatred arises from division, anger and polarization. One approach: Platform for a fact-based dialogue, as a replacement for Instagram and Co.

Hatred divides communities, intensifies conflicts and creates isolation. It often arises from frustration, anger or the feeling of insecurities. These destructive emotions thrive in a society marked by division and polarization. People are divided into categories – poor or rich, left or right, us or them. Social media reinforces this black-and-white thinking by dominating extreme positions, while differentiated voices are barely heard. An effective approach to hatred starts with ourselves: We need to learn to recognize anger and think for ourselves about where it comes from. At the social level, this requires a platform for dialogue in which people from different backgrounds can reduce prejudices. Educational programs should promote the handling of emotions and conflicts and strengthen media literacy to detect disinformation. In the long term, we need to raise awareness of global contexts in order to break down boundaries in the mind. Hatred is not an unavoidable reality, but always an inner decision. It needs unity instead of division, dialogue instead of polarization and responsibility for our coexistence. I suggest that in the long run we build a platform on which a fact-based exchange takes place and which offers a replacement for Instagram and Tik Tok. I have already developed an idea for it, which I would very much like to contribute. Just wondering where.
