A new European budget fit for our ambitions
A driving force behind European action
Safe Food, Safe Planet, Safe Future. EU Budget for food safety
The future budget of the European Union must reflect real needs and ensuring equitable access to healthy, local and ethical food should be a key priority. The current food system is failing – consumers receive highly processed food that harms public health, the environment and quality of life. Research indicates the need to redesign the food system towards a plant-based and equitable model. The report "Food System Impacts on Biodiversity Loss" (Chatham House, 2021) highlights that the current agricultural model is a major cause of biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation. In turn, the IPCC report (2023) indicates that switching to a plant-based diet can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The results of these studies are clear: EU funds under the common agricultural policy, structural funds and cohesion policy must support the plant sector. The European Union should ensure fair access to finance for plant-based food producers and create a healthy food environment. Retail chains must promote fair, local food, and public institutions such as schools, kindergartens and hospitals should guarantee access to nutritious plant-based meals. There is no basis for further EU funding to support the livestock sector. The EU budget must support the green industrialisation of the food and farming sectors, for the health of citizens and the protection of the environment.
