Empowering Citizens in EU Budget Allocation: A Participatory Budget Approach

Avatar: Paulo ROSA Paulo ROSA

Proposal to allocate a percentage of the EU budget to a participatory budgeting process, enabling citizens to directly vote on funding priorities. This approach would increase transparency, accountability, and civic engagement.

-- Citizens discuss and prioritize EU budget allocations, considering factors such as EU policies, citizen needs, and regional disparities.
-- Citizens vote online on the proposed allocations, for example by ranking preferences or allocating a virtual budget.
-- The EU budged is allocated based on the overall preferences of all citizens.
-- Regular updates and evaluations ensure the effective use of funds.

Initially, it should start as a pilot project to test and refine the approach, and gradually increase the percentage of the budget allocated to participatory budgeting.

By introducing participatory budgeting, the EU can strengthen its democratic foundations, increase citizen engagement, and ensure that the budget truly reflects the needs and priorities of its citizens.
