A new European budget fit for our ambitions

A driving force behind European action

Higher budget for night rail transport

In a European Union that increasingly needs to be more connected, it is imperative that its citizens are able to travel between the metropolises of the union without the need to rely on air transport. The European Union has been declared a climate emergency since 2019, and has to offer the possibility of moving around the territory in a sustainable, horizontal and cheap way. An example of the need for this measure is that a flight from Barcelona to Amsterdam consumes 762 kg of CO2, can carry approximately 200 people, while electric-powered rail transport would be more energy efficient and have a greater transport capacity. Many EU countries have a rail transport deficit: short, medium and long distance trains are inefficient, poor and limited. Many European citizens are unable to travel, not only in other European cities, but within their own nation or region, because of the inefficiency of some rail services. The European Union is urged to invest more in transport to support its climate objectives, implement measures against the climate emergency and regulate transport services in a functional way so that they are flexible, efficient and punctual. It would therefore be advantageous for the European Commission to have rail passenger transport as one of the main lines of its green transition strategy and energy sovereignty.
