Bridging Generations for a Fairer Future: Education, Mobility, and Solidarity

Avatar: Daniela VONO DE VILHENA Daniela VONO DE VILHENA

Envisioning a European Union where generations unite for a flourishing society means ensuring that opportunities and resources are shared across age groups, fostering a system where knowledge, experience, and social mobility benefit everyone. Findings from research conducted at the EU-funded Mapineq Project by Professor Fabrizio Bernardi and his team highlight that equitable access to higher education is key to this vision. Yet, it remains a privilege of a few, limiting mobility and deepening intergenerational inequalities. To break this cycle, we need policies that not only support young people in accessing education but also empower older generations to mentor and guide them, playing a vital role in closing opportunity gaps and strengthening intergenerational solidarity. Making this vision a reality requires action on multiple fronts. Expanding access to education must go hand in hand with mentorship programs linking students with experienced professionals and lifelong learning opportunities for older adults. Investments should ensure early and sustained support for disadvantaged youth while valuing the contributions of older individuals in shaping a fairer, more inclusive society. By fostering collaboration and shared opportunities, the EU can promote true social mobility and ensure prosperity benefits all generations. Source: tinyurl.com/2rfv9jk9
