Urgent delivery with drones for rural areas: sustainable solution for medicines and essential products
We propose a European drone delivery service to improve last mile logistics in isolated rural areas. This initiative would allow the rapid delivery of medicines, agricultural spare parts and urgent documentation in villages with poor logistical connectivity, such as those in the province of León (Spain). Drones reduce costs, emissions and delivery times, and improve the quality of life in depopulated Spain. We suggest that the EU supports pilot projects of this nature with funding under the cohesion, digitalisation and green transition funds, also providing a harmonised regulatory framework for the use of drones in rural deliveries. This would boost innovation in sustainable logistics, fostering territorial inclusion and equal access to basic services, especially in regions affected by depopulation. We ask for institutional support so that this technological solution can be scaled up to other European territories with similar needs.
