Combating Sharenting and Enhancing Child Protection in Digital Environment
Sharenting represents a modern phenomenon concerning the protection of the rights of minors on the internet against the unconsidered actions of their parents. This issue exposes children to multiple negative risks, including the creation of a digital footprint at an early age, negative impacts on future employment or relationships, bullying, cyberbullying, disruption of the parent-child relationship, stalking, pedophilia, or identity theft. The protection of children's rights against sharenting is rooted in several rights guaranteed under EU law — the right to the protection of personal data, the right to respect for private and family life, or the protection of the child's best interests (among others Article 16 TFEU, Regulation GDPR, Articles 7, 8, and 24 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU, Digital Decade 2030 strategy). Allocated funding would enable the implementation of targeted campaigns for parents and schools, support for research into the psychological and legal impacts of sharenting on child development, support for legislative initiatives, the creation and financing of network for the protection of children's digital rights, or the development of digital tools and technologies in this field. The prevention of the adverse consequences of sharenting deserves systematic support at the level of the EU as preventing the loss of children's privacy is an investment in protecting human dignity and the fundamental rights of the most vulnerable ones — the minors.
