Promotion of Women's Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Artisan Fashion in Rural Areas of Europe

We call on the European Commission to develop specific measures to support female entrepreneurship in rural Europe, focusing on the sustainable fashion sector and artisanal production. This proposal was born from the "BABIBAGS" project, a business initiative located in the region of Babia (León, Spain), whose objective is to design and manufacture high quality handbags using local raw materials such as merino wool and leather of regional origin. The European Union can play a key role in supporting companies such as BABIBAGS through two key axes: Establishing a European fund for rural women's entrepreneurship: to prioritise funding for initiatives led by women in territories at risk of depopulation, especially in sectors such as artisanal textiles and ethical fashion. This would not only promote equal opportunities, but would also help boost local employment and preserve traditional trades. Development of a European quality label for artisanal and sustainable fashion: in order to recognise and promote products made with local, sustainable and traceable raw materials. Such a seal would facilitate market access, add value to the European product against low-quality imports and help the consumer identify responsible options.
