More budget for sustainable fisheries and small scale fishers

Avatar: Justine Borg Justine Borg

Small-scale fisheries are rapidly disappearing. Rising costs of fish bait and vessel expenses, combined with a drastic decline in fish catches, are forcing small-scale fishers to surrender their licenses. Meanwhile, large-scale fisheries, often using destructive gear, continue to fish extensively, causing the greatest impact on fish populations—yet they are the only ones able to sustain operations. This needs to change. More funding should be allocated to support small-scale fisheries and innovative projects that promote sustainable fishing practices. Additionally, investments in sustainable aquaculture should be prioritised, as the growing trend of open-cycle aquaculture is not a viable long-term solution.
