The EAN phenomenon, elder abuse and neglect, is a serious problem where older people are subjected to inappropriate treatment by their loved ones, families, partners, children, grandchildren and people who only occasionally come to their homes. In the context of residential services, between 10% and 80% of employees (according to EAN type) speak about various forms of violence as witnesses and perpetrators. The impacts represent major financial and human losses. Many EU countries do not have independent complaint mechanisms in place; solutions are in "no man's land". The EU should find and finance prevention tools and solutions.
