A new European budget fit for our ambitions

A driving force behind European action

European Fund for the Protection of Marine Diversity

Avatar: Judith Talamino Judith Talamino

What do we propose? We propose the creation of a European Union Fund exclusively for the protection of marine biodiversity. The objective is for Member States to receive financial resources to finance specific projects that contribute to the conservation and restoration of marine ecosystems. These resources would be used to: - Protection of endangered species (such as sea turtles or marine mammals). - Cleaning of marine litter (especially plastics). - Creation and management of marine protected areas. - Restoration of marine habitats. Why do we think it's important? Ensuring the protection of marine biodiversity should be a clear EU objective, taking into account that between 21% and 54% of all microplastic particles in the world are found in the Mediterranean, affecting a wide variety of animals, microorganisms and plants in this sea. According to the WWF (World Wildlife Fund), marine life across Europe is being damaged by a lack of more active management in protected areas. In addition, only 10% of EU waters are protected "on paper", endangering many marine species. To control this situation and ensure a better future, it is vital to invest in generous financing and comprehensive monitoring of Europe's marine areas, in order to have the resources to drive real change.
