Intergenerational Fairness

Have your say and have an impact on policy

Bringing European generations together through the Welfare State and active citizen participation

I am Canarian, I am 35 years old, I am a mother of two young girls and a lawyer. I consider that the generation gap is growing, gaining strength dangerous political discourses that tend to confront us. I see this initiative as an opportunity for the Member States to work towards that end by setting up permanent intergenerational working groups that come together in a common European network. I propose educational measures that encourage intergenerational exchange, such as school visits to nursing homes. Also promote the digital literacy of the elderly to ensure their autonomy. It would be interesting to promote community work for minor offenders that promotes respect and cooperation with older people. I also propose to finance university projects that promote the economy of rural areas, enhancing the strengths of each region. Housing is a cross-cutting problem that affects the generation gap; to make it easier for young people to have a life project and form a family, the EAFRD could support cooperatives in the primary sector with youth participation that encourage the transfer of young people to aging and depopulated villages, while easing stressed cities since only lowering the price of rural housing is insufficient. In the area of leisure, group trips or activities that mix young people and retirees could be organized, since institutions tend to segregate them.
