Intergeneration solidarity instead of intergenerational fairness

Avatar: Herman Fonck Herman Fonck

We believe that in a society for all ages we should encourage solidarity and equity within and in between generations. One should not calculate efforts between generations and check if there is a symmetric effort between generations. Solidarity implies to ask efforts from the stronger ones to help the weakest, efforts from the wealthiest to help the poor, from the healthy people to the sick people. And this regardless the generation of which they make part.

We won’t apologize als elderly people because we are a growing number of older people. We won’t apologize because we live longer. We won’t apologize if elderly people need more health care. We want solidarity in between generations and between generations to solve those questions. Who needs help, need to be helped, regardless the size of his of her generation. Generation is not relevant when it is about solidarity.

If the younger generation has a clear right to demand efforts or accountability from the older generations , it is for sure about the state of the world in which our generation has left the young generation. A world with worries about a sustainable climate, threatened peace, all too many children growing up in poverty. If our generation has a moral obligation towards the younger generation, fairness, it is in the first place about climate measures, peace and combating poverty. Three political domains in which the EU is less ambitious then in the past.

We need that intergenerational solidarity !
