An EU Action Plan to Combat Ageism will promote employment and social inclusion for all ages

A Union based on equality must support its citizens throughout their lives and at all ages. Age discrimination and ageism however creates significant barriers that prevent older people from participating fully in working life and society, exacerbating economic difficulties and leading to poverty. By combating these discriminatory practices and promoting solidarity between generations, we can foster an inclusive and equitable society, as well as more sustainable growth and a competitive and cohesive economy.

An EU Action Plan to Combat Ageism is essential to better protect Europeans of all ages against discrimination and foster intergenerational solidarity. It should be the cornerstone of the EU's strategy on Intergenerational Fairness, based on human rights, intersectionality, and equality. It must ensure that the EU and its Member States commit to guaranteeing equal rights for all ages and to mainstreaming age equality in all EU policies, including in the areas of employment and social inclusion. This approach responds to the diverse needs and aspirations of an ageing population, creating opportunities for lifelong learning, career development, inclusion, and adequate income for people of all ages.
