EU Action Plan to Combat Ageism as part of the Strategy on Intergenerational Fairness
To build a true ‘Union of Equality’ and achieve intergenerational fairness, the EU must tackle ageism and age discrimination and dismantle the structural barriers that prevent people of all ages from enjoying equal rights and opportunities. Ageism remains overlooked, yet it is affecting employment, full/affordable/equal access to key services such as public transportation or housing, adequate income, health and long-term care, and full participation in all aspects of life.
Challenging ageist narratives and reviewing policies through the lens of age equality and human rights is vital to create fair, inclusive, and resilient societies.
AGE Platform Europe calls for age equality to be mainstreamed into all EU policies [https://www.age-platform.eu/areas-of-work/age-equality/] to meet the needs and aspirations of an ageing society. An EU Action Plan to Combat Ageism should be part of the Strategy on Intergenerational Fairness, reflecting the diversity of older persons, encouraging active and healthy ageing, building on intergenerational solidarity, and promoting the rights of older people.
By aligning with existing EU equality strategies and leveraging EU research like the FutuRes project [https://futu-res.eu/], the EU can turn ageing into a driver of cohesion and inclusion, ensuring everyone has full and equal access to society throughout life.
