Making diabetes care fair and accessible for all young people
The young participants said that national healthcare systems across the EU need to better adapt real-life challenges of living with diabetes. They explained that young people often face fragmented care, outdated equipment, or long waiting times: problems that make daily management harder. They also highlighted striking inequalities in access to medication and technology: in some countries, the price of insulin and related treatments can be more than three times higher than in others. Young people called for greater harmonisation of healthcare services, fair pricing, and better EU-wide coordination to ensure that no one’s health depends on where they live. For them, managing diabetes should never be a privilege - it should be a right.
While fully respecting the national competence in the organisation and delivery of health services and medical care, what can the EU do to support Member States in improving access for young people to diabetes treatment and care and promote the use of the digital and innovative technologies?
