Social media platforms must take responsibility for online safety
Several young voices argued that social media platforms have a big role to play in tackling online bullying, hate speech, and harassment.
They called for clearer rules, faster moderation, and visible consequences for harmful behaviour. Transparency was a key demand — participants stressed that platforms must be open about how they handle reports and show users what actions are taken.
They criticised current reporting systems as too slow, confusing, and hard to use, saying that reporting abuse should be as quick and easy as posting. To fix this, they proposed a simplified, EU-wide reporting system that works across platforms and languages, with real follow-up so users feel heard and protected.
Young people also called for stronger age verification tools to keep minors safe but said these must respect privacy and avoid collecting unnecessary personal data. Finally, they emphasised that keeping young people safe online is a shared responsibility — platforms, parents, and schools all need to team up to make digital spaces safer and more supportive.
What would make you feel truly safe and supported online — and how can platforms, parents, and schools work together to make that happen?
