Young Citizens Assembly on Pollinators was a deliberative process aiming to provide young people from across the EU an opportunity for a more direct involvement in policymaking on environmental issues – an area that is consistently prioritised by youth – in particular on the decline of wild pollinating insects. Between September 2025 and March 2026, the Assembly gathered 100 young people selected through democratic lottery to represent the diversity of EU youth population.
During three in-person and two online sessions, Assembly members learned about the issue and EU governance mechanisms from experts, discussed different perspectives with stakeholders, and exchanged with EU officials on the existing policies. The core part of the process consisted in deliberating over key challenges and options with the aim of producing policy recommendations on reversing the decline of wild pollinating insects.
Ultimately, the Assembly proposed 32 actions calling for reduction in the use and toxicity of pesticides, protection and restoration of pollinator habitats, and support for farmers in moving towards more pollinator-friendly agriculture. The young Assembly members also identified key conditions of success, including stronger monitoring and enforcement of existing environmental policies, increased funding for conservation actions, as well as education and communication initiatives that encourage cultural change.
Beyond the policy focus on pollinators, the Assembly also reflected on the role of young people in biodiversity governance, given the particular stake that youth have in long-term environmental action. To strengthen their voice in decision making, members called for the creation of a Permanent Young Citizens Assembly on Biodiversity and produced indications on how such a process should look like.
