Use dedicated funding to turn pollinator research into public awareness and practical change

Allocate dedicated funding to ensure that scientific research on pollinators effectively informs society and supports concrete changes in practices. This should follow a cyclical approach. This should include:

  • Ensuring long-term funding for research on pollinators and biodiversity, in order to support scientific knowledge, technological innovation and the development of solutions that reduce pressures on pollinators.

  • Supporting intermediaries such as NGOs and media organisations so they can translate scientific findings into accessible information for the wider public, including through public information campaigns and science communication initiatives.

  • Ensuring that research results reach the actors most directly concerned, particularly farmers, so that they can integrate new knowledge and practices into their activities, including through stronger knowledge transfer between researchers, advisory services and farmers.

Public funding for the agricultural sector should also include conditions and incentives encouraging the adoption of practices that are more respectful of pollinators, so that scientific knowledge is effectively implemented in practice: in education programmes and pedagogical activities for children (eg: gardens in schools, pedagogical farms...) because educate future generations are essential.

The European Commission and Member States should allocate funding for research programmes, science communication initiatives and knowledge transfer mechanisms. Research institutions, NGOs and media organisations should disseminate scientific knowledge to the public, while agricultural advisory services and relevant stakeholders should help ensure that new knowledge and innovations are effectively implemented in practice.
