Young Citizens Assembly on Pollinators

How do we reverse the decline of wild pollinating insects?

Support for volunteering and citizen science

Goals & ideas: Research should include the impacts on people’s lives and citizens should be involved in this research in meaningful ways.

Asks & recommendations: Support volunteering projects around citizen science, especially in rural areas, to give opportunities for children and young people to support their communities.

These ideas were developed by children participating in the 2nd General Assembly of the EU Children’s Participation Platform, during workshops on pollinators decline in the context of climate action. Some of the recommendations developed were also presented to decision-makers at the 15th European Forum on the Rights of the Child (https://link.europa.eu/3P6RRG). See below some more highlights from the workshop discussions:

  • Volunteering in rural areas could create opportunities for people who live there but also support exchanges with people who live in cities and don't know about countryside and nature.

  • We should try to make it easier for children to participate in climate and nature projects. Volunteering or projects on biodiversity could be organised by schools or in collaboration between schools and universities.

  • It's important to inform well about volunteering opportunities. Many young people still know little about problems like the decline of pollinators or projects that are being done.

  • We could have a social media platform for citizen scientists and scientists, to spread the word about their work and help them connect.
