Young Citizens Assembly on Pollinators
How do we reverse the decline of wild pollinating insects?
Support for climate and pollinator science
Goals & ideas: We need to know more about pollinators and what they do and how to live with and protect them. We need to find more ecological methods to manage biodiversity.
Asks & recommendations: Developing legislation to support scientists to stay in their universities and do research to prevent climate change. More funding should be invested in research to continue to evidence climate change and its impacts.
These ideas were developed by children participating in the 2nd General Assembly of the EU Children’s Participation Platform, during workshops on pollinators decline in the context of climate action. Some of the recommendations developed were also presented to decision-makers at the 15th European Forum on the Rights of the Child (https://link.europa.eu/3P6RRG). See below some more highlights from the workshop discussions:
The situation of scientists in many countries is not so good. Many of them move abroad. We need legislation and support that will help them stay in their countries and do research on environment.
Hire more scientists to address lack of information on pollinators. Governments should fund more people who can help us understand better the situation.
The role of scientists could be promoted more, for example by making presentations during job days in schools, so children know this is something one can do in adult life.
