Creating appropriate spaces for pollinators

Asks & recommendations: Create more habitats for wild pollinators, including in our neighbourhoods and around schools. These creatures are essential for climate protection. This could include regulating public light during nighttime so that the light does not affect the night pollinators, and stronger rules on pesticides use so pollinators and human consumers are not harmed. For policy makers to export the European standards instead of lowering our standards for importation.

These ideas were developed by children participating in the 2nd General Assembly of the EU Children’s Participation Platform, during workshops on pollinators decline in the context of climate action. Some of the recommendations developed were also presented to decision-makers at the 15th European Forum on the Rights of the Child (https://link.europa.eu/3P6RRG). See below some more highlights from the workshop discussions:

  • We can try to use built areas in smarter ways: green areas on roofs, avoid paving wherever possible, using existing paths and roads.

  • We could have incentives for farmers and citizens to keep some of their land wild.

  • Some of the caring or creating of the green spaces could be done by citizens. But if citizens want to create green spaces, they should get physical support (for heavy lifting!) but also a bit of money.

  • If we reuse and recycle, we do not damage more habitats to get resources.
