Young Citizens Assembly on Pollinators

How do we reverse the decline of wild pollinating insects?

Education and awareness raising

Goals & ideas: Everyone is affected by climate change. Education is important but this includes projects so that people can become really aware of what is happening.

Asks & recommendations: Provide education for all people (every generation) about climate and pollinators decline, including how different aspects are connected and how we can live with other species (e.g., insects). Spread awareness about pollinators to all groups of people: children, parents, grandparents, teachers, authorities. Policy makers should be more knowledgeable about actions connected to pollinators preservation. Change labelling so that people know what really made their food, e.g., ‘This was made by bees’.

These ideas were developed by children participating in the 2nd General Assembly of the EU Children’s Participation Platform, during workshops on pollinators decline in the context of climate action. Some of the recommendations developed were also presented to decision-makers at the 15th European Forum on the Rights of the Child (https://link.europa.eu/3P6RRG). See below some more highlights from the workshop discussions:

  • It's important that people who work for the environment know that they are not alone. Their communities should know what they are doing, so they can receive support.

  • Young people and children are often already very aware and concerned about the environment. When we speak about education, we should put more focus on adults.

  • Education should be more interactive and include going into nature. It is important to see things first-hand to make them more relatable. Classroom education is often too abstract.
