Intergenerational justice - Towards a fairer future for all generations
The concept of intergenerational justice refers to the moral and political duty of current generations to ensure that their decisions, resources and opportunities do not undermine the right of future generations to a dignified life. This is a principle directly linked to sustainable development, democracy and human rights. Intergenerational justice requires that policy design takes into account not only the present, but also the needs of those who will live after us. Technological progress and the digital transition are creating new challenges for intergenerational fairness. It is necessary to ensure that artificial intelligence and digital networks serve the public interest, without widening social inequalities or restricting fundamental freedoms. Equal access to digital skills and the protection of privacy must be seen as rights for all, regardless of age or social status.Intergenerational fairness, however, is not limited to political or economic measures. It is also a question of values. It requires a change of mindset: replacing individual interest with collective interest and indifference with responsibility. Cultivating a culture that sees the future as a common good is perhaps the deepest form of justice we can offer. It is the bridge that connects the present with the future.
