Intergenerational Fairness

A Call for Radical Mentorship
The discourse on Intergenerational Fairness often focuses on resource distribution, but we must also address the transfer of courage. Our societies instill a profound bias towards the "given," associating change with loss, and the safeguarding of tradition with safety, acceptance, and respect. This burdens each and all of us, younger generations included, with hesitance, if not fear, and limits our potential.
Elders can leverage their accumulated wisdom to decisively encourage younger people toward "leaps of faith" and the pursuit of transformative "What if?" questions, effectively reframing change and the ‘unknown’ as an incubator of opportunities and possibilities. Specially designed workshops can facilitate a significant exchange where elders share pivotal life experiences: moments where they broke with the 'safe' past for personal fulfillment or systemic change. It is equally important to expose the internal and external factors that caused hesitation or prevention, along with the resulting consequences, as well as the motivations and rewards of daring action. This process can inspire youth to overcome the burdens of group peering and actively shape their present and future.
