"About Time" - Intergenerational time bank to exchange help, care, and companionship

Avatar: Diana M-PINTER Diana M-PINTER

I propose creating an intergenerational time bank where young people and older citizens can sign up to exchange time, care, and companionship. Young people could volunteer to help elderly people with daily tasks, offer digital support, or simply spend time together. For every hour contributed, the young volunteer earns credits in the time bank. These credits could later be used by themselves or transferred to family members when they need support in the future.

This system addresses several challenges. First, it reduces loneliness among older generations by fostering genuine human connections. Second, it helps alleviate the growing shortage of care workers and support services, since time contributions expand community resources. Third, it builds a culture of reciprocity and fairness between generations, ensuring that those who give time when they are young can rely on the community when they are older.

A time bank strengthens social solidarity, encourages volunteering, and provides a fair, sustainable way to share care across generations.
