Intergenerational Fairness

The case of real estate

In France, older generations have had access to affordable housing, whereas today it is almost impossible to own property in areas where jobs are located. This contributes to the decline in the birth rate: the quality of life of the younger generations continues to decline. Many seniors take advantage of this situation, having bought at low prices and now reselling or renting at exorbitant amounts. This injustice is reinforced by the transfer of real estate assets. Access to housing is increasingly dependent on inheritance and less and less on work. Thus, two people working as hard as each other may have radically different destinies depending on the family in which they were born. As real estate weighs heavily in the budget and in life, this creates real social castes, where the future is conditioned by inheritance and not by individual effort. By working, younger generations are financing old people’s pensions, which have already benefited from affordable real estate and a better quality of life. However, there is no guarantee that we will have a pension ourselves: the system is based on assets, but these are less and less numerous. We are asked to contribute to a model that we may not benefit from, which further accentuates intergenerational injustice.
